Welcome to String Theory, Blue Hill, Maine, United States. String Theory evolved from the imagination and creativity of Tanis Williams and Karen Grover. Tanis and Karen have been involved in textile arts for over 20 years. Karen is a spinner and former weaver. Tanis is a quilter, focusing on embellishing with beads and silk ribbon. Both are passionate knitters, and recently embarked into the realm of hand dyeing yarn. The colorways and patterns achieved in the dyeing process were so rewarding that we decided to make our hand dyed yarn available to other knitters. The response was enormously encouraging; all leading to the realization of a vision - String Theory became a reality.
Our shop is drenched in color, and texture. Yarns from all over the world adorn the shelves with emphasis placed on natural fibers including wool, silk, alpaca, and mohair. In addition to String Theory Hand Dyed Yarn, one can also find Manos, Malabrigo, Noro, Lorna's Lace, Fiesta, Elsebeth Lavold, and more including exquisite local yarn from Northern Bay Handspun Fibers. In addition to yarn and spinning fibers, String Theory carries a complete array of knitting supplies, gorgeous handmade buttons by Shipyard Point Glassworks, fabulous bags made by Julie Havener, an exciting library of books and patterns, paintings, sculpture and jewelry by local artists are all available.
We produce String Theory Hand Dyed Yarn in our homes on the coast of Maine. Each dye lot is unique, and each skein holds secrets that are revealed as the fiber is knit. String Theory Hand Dyed Yarn is vibrant and alive with inspiration drawn from forests, fields, sunrises, and all that encompasses the extraordinary coastline of Maine. The complexity and depth of colors in each batch of yarn is representative of Tanis and Karen's individual personalities, moods, and spirits.
String Theory is located in the coastal town of Blue Hill, Maine, in the historic Eben Mayo House, locally known as Mountain View.
