Welcome to the Surfers Paradise State School, Surfers Paradise, Australia. The Surfers Paradise State School was opened in 1934 in Laycock Street in Surfers Paradise. Surfers Paradise State School's present site in St Andrews Avenue, on the Isle of Capri was established in 1976 as a result of the growth to the central Surfers Paradise area. The School experienced a decline in population over a number of years. The past few years have seen changes in our School population. Our current enrolments are approximately 600 students including prep.School Environment: The current site is 2.3 hectares in area and is primarily flat land. There is a variety of garden areas scattered around the School. The grounds are generally easily maintained, with a number of irrigation systems supporting ovals and gardens. Shade is provided in undercover areas, under buildings, in the pool area and on a section of the multipurpose court. There are externally designated shade areas between E and F Blocks.
Buildings are generally double story with classrooms of an "architectural special design". These are utilised by teachers in a variety of ways including; * single classrooms * team teaching and composite
* multi level classrooms. The current facilities while adequate for present needs, must be monitored in the light of present and future growth. Our new Prep building was completed ready for operation in 2007. A council oval situated opposite the School is used for lunchtime play and sporting activities.
Student Background: In all, 29 languages and cultural backgrounds are represented at the School, with approximately 125 students or 22% of our population with a Non English speaking backgrounds with a range of languages including: * Japanese * Chinese * Greek * Mandarin
The English as a Second Language (ESL) unit provides support for both our new arrivals and children from Non English Speaking Backgrounds (NESB). Some fee paying students are also accepted as this assists in supplementing the support we are able to provide to all students. Students travel to and from School using a variety of modes of transport. Surfside Buslines service the School on its regular commercial routes with 4 buses operating.
