Built in 1987 the house got its present name "Tanah Merah" in 1998. It is Malay and means "red soil". On this red soil Singapore was built. It is also the title of a very exciting historical novel set in Singapore; the name of a ferry terminal, and one of the most famous golf clubs in Singapore. For nearly six years the present owners lived in Singapore and came to love it; so the name of the house keeps the memories alive.
As soon as you step through the front door of this Bed and Breakfast, you realise that Tanah Merah in Plettenberg Bay SA, is not an ordinary holiday house. From this point you have a view over the living and dining area and you realise that the furnishing in Tanah Merah is not designed for wet and sandy beach people. Many old prints, antique furniture and objects d'art attract your attention. Nearly every piece of furniture tells its own exciting story, and one day when you are a guest in this house, the owners would like to tell you about the origin and meaning of all these beautiful things.
The garden and pool area of Tanah Merah was renovated in 2001.The area around the pool has been tiled and the pool water laps enticingly over the edge of the pool, so you can enjoy looking at the garden while you swim. The pool is now solar heated. The expensive reorganisation of the garden and the pool area has turned it into an oasis of peace and relaxation.
