Welcome to the TextilMuseum, St. Gallen, Switzerland.
The Museum, which was set up in 1878 for the promotion of the industry, began to collect textiles as patterns. At the same time, each embroidery company compiled its own collection with textile patterns geared to its own production. With time, these collections were donated to the TextilMuseum, St. Gallen. The collection activities of the Iklé family are of supreme significance in this context.
The TextilMuseum's internationally acknowledged collection, which contains some 30 000 objects, is made up of textiles found in Egyptian tombs, historic embroideries from the 14th century onwards, handmade lace from major European lace centers, ethnic textiles, historic fabrics and costumes, needlework utensils, as well as objects of contemporary textile art. The inventory of Eastern Swiss hand and machine embroideries documents the impressive development of St.Gallen's embroidery industry.
