Indeed the attractive market towns of Keswick and Cockermouth are just three and nine miles away respectively.  For the walker, Skiddaw, Helvellyn and Blencathra are all nearby. Thornthwaite Forest lies immediately behind the house, so guests will find forest trails and walks nearby, where a wide variety of birds and other wildlife, including deer, can be seen. Red Squirrels invite themselves to dinner from the bird tables on most days, along with the woodpeckers, nuthatches, goldcrest and numerous other bird species.  Activities within easy reach of Thwaite Howe Hotel include bird watching, pony trekking, sailing and boating: Bassenthwaite Lake is just a mile away.
