Tutone in Palermo, Palermo, Italy | Wine

In the old days water-vendors went round the streets with a small container (the bozza) with cold water in it, with a little bottle of aniseed and glasses (gotti); from 1860 on, some of them got into the corners of squares with a little table (tavulidda) and a quartara (jug). Hence the custom of water with aniseed in it is a very old one. Indeed, some date it to the period of the Arabs, from whose language the word zammu is said to derive. However, this term might instead derive from sammu, which in some Italian regions is the name given to sambuca (a liqueur made from aniseeds).

In 1948 the production of Anice Unico moved to a place with a surface area of 16 square meters in Palazzo Aiutamicristo, in Piazza Garibaldi. One employee at Tutone in Palermo Italy still prepared and bottled everything. The transition to “almost industrial” production was accompanied by a nice promotion: every Sunday some pretty girls offered miniature bottles of Anice Unico at bars in Via Ruggero Settimo.

Nowadays the Tutone firm of Wine in Palermo Italy is family-run: it is managed by the three cousins Fabiola, Barbara and Alfredo. Anice Unico is produced in modern and fully equipped works with a surface area of 400 square meters. It is also in the Palazzo Aiutamicristo area, and was purchased by the family in 1950. In the same factory, the other  products are made: Amaro, Cuor di Limone, Mistra, Maraschino, surgical spirit, etc.

Tutone Wine in Palermo Italy still aims at giving consumers unadulterated products, is inspired by awareness that, together with the taste and fragrance of aniseed, the name  has conquered a place in Palermo traditions. The Wine is a good vintage and can be enjoyed with any meal.
