Valletta G House in Valletta, Malta Island, Malta | Self Catering

A historic house in Malta for the discerning traveller

Valletta G House is a graceful private town house within the walls of Valletta, a World Heritage City on the islands of Malta. This 16th century home has been restored with love and attention to detail, equipped with all mod cons while still maintaining its original character.

When travelling with my partner to various destinations worldwide we always look for particular places to stay - properties that carry their location’s singular stamp and character. We look for accommodation that reflects the country’s history and culture in both architecture and furnishings. This is why we decided to share our house with other like-minded travellers.

Valletta G House is as far removed from the blandness of hotels and normal holiday lets as you can get. Going through the pictures and information on this website you will get a taste of the sheer pleasure of staying in a house that feels like home... a house featured for its beauty in magazines

The Bedroom

Ascend the stairs from the Sitting Room and you find yourself in the largest room in the house with window and traditional Maltese wooden balcony (see inset) overlooking the street.

The feeling is that of sumptuous luxury, a queen-sized bed with large dark wood posts and a subtle hanging Knights’ cross tapestry. Romantic and comfortable, the attention to detail in the room’s accessories is breathtaking.

The original artwork in the room is a photographic interpretation of Gericault’s painting “The Raft of the Medusa”. Measuring almost 2 meters in width, with a cast of 12 models and a specially built set, it features the story of the survivors from a ship called Medusa at the moment they spot a ship on the horizon

In the evenings settle comfortably in the two leather armchairs and have a read of the available books on Malta and other reading material in the niche-library. A sound system along with a choice of Maltese and Classical Music CDs will help create the mood.

The kitchen

The crossed stone arches (hnejjiet) are a real feature in this recently refurbished cellar-kitchen with traditional stone cupboards, full-sized country kitchen sink and refrigerator, electric oven and hob.

In the past the cellar, the coolest room in the house, would have been used to store wine bottles and food jars. Today, its coolness offers a refuge from the hot summer weather outside.

The cellar/kitchen has a window that gives unto the street secured with the original iron gratings as well as a ventilator also secured with an iron grating (sprall)

With plenty of counter-top space for you to prepare fresh meals, you will find the cabinets and drawers stocked with dishes and utensils.

Pots and pans hang on a “rampila”, the traditional Maltese tool used to fish out the pail from the bottom of the well. On one side of the kitchen is a sealed well. In the past it would have been shared between several households.

The wooden kitchen table comfortably seats four, a great excuse to invite guests to savour your newly acquired skills in Maltese cuisine.

The Lounge

The first room you come across is the sitting room, through a Maltese “Antiporta”, the traditional Maltese second door made out of dark wood and wine coloured glass. The walls in the room have been stripped back to the Maltese limestone with its warm hues.

Settle down with a cup of tea and watch digital TV (including news channel CNN, 4 local stations, Italian Rai and Mediaset channels and World Fashion Channel) or a DVD (multi zone DVD Player and library) to while away the evening after a fine dinner or a theatre evening at the Manoel Theatre in Valletta.

The big artwork above the solid wood bench is an original photographic interpretation of the famous painting by Eugene Delacroix. Eugene’s original is at the Musee du Louvre.

The big window still has the original wrought iron guard.
