Walker Smith Solicitor roots date back to 1946 when a practice was opened by Frank Summerville at Wingham. That practice continued in Wingham and in 1980 was run by Geoff Slack. In 1980 Bill Walker and Peter Smith formed Walker Smith Solicitors in partnership in Taree. They soon merged with the Geoff Slack practice at Wingham. The firm was known as Walker Slack & Smith until Geoff Slack retired.
The Taree office was initially located in Albert Street, near the Courthouse. In 1985 the firm moved to new premises on the corner of Manning St and Victoria St, and later moved elsewhere in Manning St. More recently the firm moved to its current location near the river, at 132 Victoria St. Bill Walker was the Mayor of Wingham Council. He later became Deputy Mayor of Greater Taree City Council (GTCC), which was created when Wingham and Taree councils amalgamated. Bill was also Chairman of Oxley County Council, and was awarded membership of the Order of Australia for services to the community. Stephen Bromhead joined the partnership in 1993 after two previous careers as a registered nurse and a detective. Bill Walker retired soon afterwards, and Michael Crozier became a partner. The firm then established its Old Bar office, and merged with JA Vaughan & Co in Forster 2002. John Walker, Bill's son, joined the partnership in 1999.
Peter Smith retired from the partnership in 2001, but continues to work for the firm as a consultant.
