Established in 1894 the Washington Golf and Country Club is located near Washington D.C in the Northern Virginia suburb of Arlington, United States. The Washington Golf and Country Club is the oldest Golf club in the Washington D.C. area. The membership enjoys a traditional Donald Ross Golf course maintained to the highest agronomic standards. The membership enjoys full country club facilities including Golf, tennis, fine dining, casual dining, pool, and a fitness center. The Club's staff is dedicated to providing outstanding friendly and professional service.
In 1894, members of the newly founded Washington Golf Club used to meet at a leased, 165 acre property owned by the Hoover family just north of Rosslyn. Their clubhouse was the Hoover?s simple, two-story farm house, believed to be located on the grounds of what is today the Woodrow Wilson School. It was simply a cozy shelter, a place where Golfers, outfitted in their regulation knickerbockers and scarlet coats, could come in from a round of the nine-hole Golf course and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow members.
The current clubhouse is Washington Golf and Country Club?s fifth version and this virtually new facility clearly sets WGCC firmly in the twenty-first century. The most recent renovation of the Clubhouse started with the demolition of the ground floor in July 2004, restoration and occupation of that floor in April 2005 and completion of the main floor in August 2006.
In 1929, thirty-five years after the founding of Washington Golf and Country Club, Arlington, Golfer?s Magazine referred to the Club as the ?Playground of Presidents?. And indeed it has been. Over its history the Club?s membership rolls have included a number of Presidents, among them Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft and Woodrow Wilson, as well as Members of the House and Senate, Supreme Court Justices, and other ranking governmental figures. They, along with the more than 750 families that currently make up the membership, have found the Club?s unique proximity to the Nation?s Capitol just one of the many attractions of membership. The WGCC members, many of whom are second and third generation, are active, friendly and gracious. An unusually large number lives in close proximity to the Club, where they have easy access to all its facilities.
