The West Highland Museum, Fort William, Scotland was founded in 1922 by a group of Lochaber folk who wished to create: 'A Museum of and for the West Highlands, second to none in the whole country'.
There was no Museum building and no collection, only a great dream. A series of summer exhibitions were held and lenders were asked to donate material to create a core collection. In 1926 the present building was purchased from the British Linen Bank. Today, the West Highland Museum, Fort William remains an independent charitable trust protecting what is: '...possibly the most important Museum collection in the Highlands.'
It is open all year round and is funded almost entirely by its admission charges. The West Highland Museum aims to record, preserve and exhibit items of historical significance and local interest.
