Welcome to Western Ranges Horse Treks, Wakefield, New Zealand. We are a small family business owned by Cheryl Dean and Dion MacLean. Cheryl has over 40 years experience with horses. Dion is a fourth generation backcountry farmer. In 1990 we pioneered our horse trekking company on a farm that has been in Dion's family since the late 1800s. Providing a genuine quality experience and encouraging care of the environment are the core values of our enterprise.
Western Ranges Horse Treks team of top horses includes Clydesdale thoroughbred and anglo-arab Clydesdale crosses, Welsh cobs, Irish hunters Arabs and appaloosas. We have twenty horses in our team with foals and youngsters coming up in our breeding program. Many of our horses are champions and still compete in show jumping events and endurance. They are free moving well schooled and love their work.
Because most of our treks involve several river crossings and take you into wild and challenging places we don't have set treks. Weather, river levels, and ground conditions in the bush are often changing. Having the Ellis, Baton, Skeet, McCarthy and Clarke valleys gives us huge scope to personalize a special trek to meet the needs of each small group on the day. With a maximum of five clients on each trek we really can maintain the quality of the experience. Our whole operation has its focus on quality. Small is beautiful.
Our ten day trek is horse trekking at its best, an experience of a lifetime....
