The Wharf Shed Restaurant is situated at the eastern end of Whakatane on the Main Wharf. It is located in an historic building, which was originally constructed as a butter store. To keep it cool, the walls and roof are lined with pumice. With the demise of the coastal steamship company the building was used by the Whakatane District Council to store official documents. It was converted to a Restaurant in 1996.
In 2004, the Restaurant was badly flooded when the Whakatane River overflowed. [Click here find out more about the floods] Extensive internal damage resulted and the Restaurant was completely refurbished to provide the welcoming nautical surroundings that exist today.
The fully licensed Restaurant comfortably seats 56 people inside the wooden clad building. There is a covered deck with additional seating and a further canopied area on the Wharf itself. Here you can dine whilst taking in the spectacular views across the river, or watch the local fishermen landing their catches.
