The vineyards of Wild Goose Vineyard, as with any Winery, are the heart of the Wine business. Everything is lost or gained in the vineyard. From the quality of Wine to the financial returns, all is based on the performance of the vineyards. Wild Goose Vineyards currently is comprised of 3 vineyard sites. The first is the 10 acres located at the Winery, 3 km's south of Okanagan Falls and 12 km's south of this, located in desert Wine country, is the 5-acre block located on the banks of the South Okanagan River known as Mystic River Vineyards, and only a short distance from this is the newly planted 11 acre Secrest Road Vineyard.
The Okanagan Falls vineyards are a combination of glacial soils and light clay. The Riesling grown here is grown in the glacial soils on a beautiful southern slope. This slope allows for the maximum exposure to the sun, especially in the fall when the plants are looking for the most sunshine possible. Large stones line the rows of the vines absorbing heat units in the day and releasing the warmth throughout the evening. The Riesling grows extremely well despite the rugged look of the soil. Many Okanagan Winemakers seek the fruit produced on this site because of the high quality. The Riesling on this slope also lends itself well to late harvest Wines.
The Gewurztraminer is grown on the flat, clay loam area of the vineyard in the British Columbia region. The Gewurztraminer grown here is of unparalleled quality. The plants are trained to the pendulum bow training system and produce very low yields. The fruit from these vines has yielded some of the best Wines of this type produced in Canada. The Gewürztraminer is an early ripening variety thus making it a favorite for all of our feathered friends. The sweetness, PH, and acid levels are consistent every year.
Planted between the Riesling and the Gewurztraminer is a small block of Marechal Foch that yields the perfect fruit for our Black Brant dessert Wine. Sugar levels of the Foch have been known to hit 28 percent!
The Vineyards of Wild Goose run along the South Okanagan River, making this one of the most beautiful vineyard sites in the Okanagan Falls. The soil consists of sandy clay and pea gravel that is very fertile and suited perfectly for the growing of grapes, and as compared to the Okanagan Falls vineyards, there is not a stone in sight!! The vineyard currently consists of Pinot Blanc that ripens to perfection every year and is also home to the famous Mystic River Gewurztraminer that has yielded white Wine of the year!!
The newly planted(2008) Secrest Road Vineyard is one of the most spectacular vineyard sites in the Okanagan, located on the western slopes of the valley overlooking the entire South Okanagan. This site is pure silty loam and clay, and unlike the vineyards of Wild Goose, there is not a stone to be found! This site has been planted with everyones favorites, Gewurztraminer, Riesling, and Merlot. New Wines from this site will arrive in 2010.
Wild Goose also contracts the fruit of 2 small vineyards located adjacent to the Okanagan Falls site. The Wilson Vineyard produces the highest quality Merlot grapes year after year and is currently run and maintained by Wild Goose The other vineyard is managed by the Hest family who grow ultra premium Pinot Noir and Merlot. These two vineyards are deemed as some of the best vineyard sites in the Okanagan.
Wild Goose also contracts Pinot Gris grapes from the Droste-Wendenburg Vineyards in Penticton. These grapes are also grown above Skaha Lake and consistently produce some of the best Pinot Gris grapes grown in the Okanagan.
