The Willow Tea Rooms

The Willow Tea Rooms in GLASGOW, Scottish Lowlands, United Kingdom | Tearoom

Welcome to the world famous The Willow Tea Rooms in GLASGOW, Scotland in the United Kingdom, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1904.
The Willow Tea Rooms remains open today to welcome visitors keen to experience the splendour of a bygone era and take tea just as they did in the same rooms and interiors 100 years ago.
Visit the interiors of both locations in GLASGOW, Scotland, and learn something of the history of this institution. Visit our gift gallery and view the select range of furniture and light shades recreated to Mackintosh's original designs and exclusive momentoes available for worldwide delivery.
The Willow Tea Rooms was the only tea room building where Mackintosh had complete control over every aspect of the design. He modelled the exterior as well as the interior of the building and even designed the tea spoons and waitresses' dresses.
The Willow Tea Rooms name comes from Sauchiehall, the street where it is situated, which in Scottish Gaelic means alley of the willows and the theme of willows featured throughout the building.
Of all the interiors created by Mackintosh, the Room de Luxe, with its silver furniture and leaded glass work, was the jewel in the crown of his twenty year partnership with Cranston and was so exclusive, customers willingly paid a penny more for their cup of tea. The design of both the furniture and interior on the Gallery were very different from the Room de Luxe. While the Room de Luxe was bright and feminine, the Gallery was darker and masculine.
In December 1983, Anne Mulhern recreated the Room de Luxe in the original location and The Willow Tea Rooms were reborn. She further developed the Sauchiehall Street building by recreating The Gallery, which opened on 14 February 1996. Like the Room de Luxe, the recreation of The Gallery was to the original design. Immediately the Willow became an extremely popular destination for visitors to the City.
An acknowledgement of the care taken in rebuilding the Willow name was the invitation in 1995 by the prestigious British Tea Council to become one of the founding members of the Guild of Tea Rooms; an invitation extended to only 50 establishments in the United Kingdom and only three in Scotland.
