The Castle of San Juan de Las Aguilas in Aguilas, Murcia, Spain dates back to the 18th century and has a long history going back to the Carthaginian era. It was abandoned after the expulsion of the Arabs from the town and several reconstruction attempts failed until Carlos I ordered it to be rebuilt circa 1530 to monitor the coastal strip between Vera and Mazarron. The Castle of San Juan de Las Aguilas was again reworked in 1579 under the mandate of Felipe II and the Tower of the Eagles was added, then again remodelled by Carlos III. Today there are very few remains, but tourists and visitors can enjoy a shield where the lions of the castle would appear, underground passages and popular legends, and from its enclave there are panoramic views over the city of Aguilas, it was a again restored in 2007 and musealized in 2009.
