Fenwick Island Lighthouse in Fenwick Island has long been an important landmark along the Delaware coast, and still today it's historic significance remains. In the mid Nineteenth century, the United States Lighthouse Board prompted the construction of a lighthouse after many shipwrecks near the Fenwick Shoals. There's an 87 foot tower with unusual design because the outer brick tower is conical, and a second inner brick tower is an 8 foot diameter cylinder, and the third order housed the Fresnel lens designed to collect and focus the light rays into a horizontal beam more efficiently than a reflector system, plus there are two lightkeepers houses which are now private residences. The Round Island Lighthouse Preservation Society in Pascagoula, Mississippi is dedicated to the restoration and preservation of the lighthouse, which was erected on the south side of Round Island, off the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, in 1859. Damaged by several hurricanes over time, the lighthouse base was relocated to a new location at the foot of the Pascagoula River Bridge on U.S. Highway 90 entering the city, and is now protected from storm winds and erosion. Today the Round Island Lighthouse serves as a welcoming beacon and attraction for boaters and all who visit. Wind Point Lighthouse in Racine, Wisconsin offers tower climbs with the opportunity to climb the 11 stories to the top of the lighthouse, and a visit to the restored Fog Horn Building which is a museum showcasing the maritime history of Racine and the Great Lakes Basin. The restored Fuel House tells the story of the historic role it played in supporting the Lighthouse, and the Memorial Brick Garden on the grounds supports educational efforts. The Lizard Lighthouse Heritage Center has distinctive twin towers which mark the most southerly point of mainland Britain, and this landfall and coast mark provides a guid for vessels in passage along the English channel as the waters are very hazardous. Lizard Lighthouse has six adjacent holiday cottages which offer breathtaking scenery and are ideally located for coastal walking with rare birds and flowers in abundance and sometimes sightings of dolphins can be spotted from the cliff tops. The Lizard Lighthouse Visitors Centre maintained and renovated by the Trinity House have refurbished the Engine Room at the lighthouse, retaining some of the old engines, and now also features new exhibition material, interactive displays and an audio visual room. Point Pinos Lighthouse in Pacific Grove, California, is located on a jagged rocky coastline, and has since 1855 been guiding seafarers to safety, hence its well-earned reputation of being the oldest operating lighthouse on the West Coast. Point Pinos Lighthouse is owned and maintained by the Public Works Department and together with The Heritage Society of Pacific Grove has beautifully restored the lighthouse and its grounds. The job of yesteryear's lighthouse keeper was primarily to care for the all important light by daily cleaning of the light to avoid damage from soot buildup, and to keep the light burning in darkness and bad weather, and to cover it in good weather to save fuel.READ MORE

Sheffield Island Lighthouse in Norwalk, Connecticut, was established as an active lighthouse in 1868 till it was retired in 1902, and today, as a listed lighthouse, is a museum and nature preserve that is beautifully maintained by willing volunteers. Lighting and accessibility on the island has been drastically improved for the benefit of visitors, and the tower light installed in the lighthouse is not used as a navigation aid, but as a welcoming beacon and reminder of the important part that this lighthouse has played in guiding boats and ships in the past. Hope Cottage Museum in Kingscote, South Australia originally built in 1859 is the restored home of Charles and Michael Calnan and showcases period furniture, china, clothing and artefacts. Come view a fascinating insight into the history and heritage of Kangaroo Island complete with re-created Willoughby Lighthouse. The Lorain Lighthouse Foundation in Lorain, Ohio restores and takes care of the lighthouse, and with a history going back all the way to 1937 when the first light was a simple lantern hanging on a pole at the water's edge, this is a fascinating place to visit. Later the beam was powered by kerosene, and the light was rebuilt at least twice more over time and on until the beacon building was installed in 1898 with the first lighthouse keeper, eventually the kerosene light was replaced by an oil vapor light, after much more history the lighthouse is now maintained as a historic landmark. Visitors here can enjoy lighthouse tours, and the museum and gift shop offers a wonderful insight and items for sale of the Jewel of the Port, as the lighthouse is known.READ MORE
