Janet Head Lighthouse2016-04-13
The Janet Head Lighthouse in Gore Bay on Manitoulin Island, Ontario is a stunning attraction owned by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and is leased to the Municipality of Gordon Barrie Island. This is a functioning lighthouse with an occulting, solar-powered LED light that flashes on for three seconds at a time, and runs 24 hours every day of the week. The Janet Head Lighthouse was built all the way back in 1879, and was originally lit with a kerosene lamp, and magnified with a thick circular glass for magnification, and the then lighthouse keeper was required to light it at nightfall and extinguish it every morning, and interestingly on sunny days would draw a heavy curtain round the room to prevent light reflecting off the glass and starting fires in the nearby woods, in foggy weather he would sound a fog horn at intervals. Come visit and take a step back in time through the fascinating history of this lighthouse, admission is free.READ MORE
