There are old volcanoes, beaches and mud flats, rocky coasts and steep hills as well as a diversity of plant and animal life including forests and old fields, marshes and ponds, spruce-fir, pine, and mixed hardwoods, wetlands and meadows, a multitude of colorful wildflowers and so much more. A bird list is available at the sanctuary headquarters and there are nesting great blue herons and ospreys, bald eagles and peregrine falcons flying over to name but a few. Holbrook Island Sanctuary is unique with a network of old roads, paths and animal trails and visitors can experience a natural environment shaped by natural forces rather than modern park facilities.
