Boat building was also a booming business with the first boat built around 1827 by John Baker, and Tancook in later years became famous for the construction of the Tancook Whalers and Schooners, noted for their speed, seaworthiness, and fine lines, this however has become a thing of the past. Big Tancook Elementary School covers a wonderful history of the island, has one teacher who is also the principal and showcases student works.
