Originally Pniel was an agricultural village, but today fruit and vegetable production has grown into a large industry, which has become the major source of income for the town. The "garden city" suburb of Pinelands is located on the edge of the southern suburbs of Cape Town in South Africa and is known for its large thatched houses. The suburb is primarily residential and is often praised for its peacefulness and abundance of trees. Pinelands is one of the few areas in Cape Town in which sale of alcohol is prohibited and is a popular place for senior citizens to retire to. While there are several retirement homes in the suburb, younger people are increasingly moving in.

Durbanville arose round the best water-source for dozens of kilometres, which drew half of all travellers in the Cape; and when, around the turn of the eighteenth century, the important routes were laid down, they went by way of the Spring which, even at the height of summer, poured out thousands of gallons of sweet water a day and, in fact, served the village of Durbanville as its water supply until 1958.
