The "garden city" suburb of Pinelands is located on the edge of the southern suburbs of Cape Town in South Africa and is known for its large thatched houses. The suburb is primarily residential and is often praised for its peacefulness and abundance of trees. Durbanville arose round the best water-source for dozens of kilometres, which drew half of all travellers in the Cape; and when, around the turn of the eighteenth century, the important routes were laid down, they went by way of the Spring which, even at the height of summer, poured out thousands of gallons of sweet water a day and, in fact, served the village of Durbanville as its water supply until 1958.
