Takapuna Beach is just a few steps from the bustling but laid-back shopping centre of Takapuna. It not only offers beautiful views across the harbour, fine white sand and safe swimming but also some excellent examples of lava-encased fossilised trees--covered by one of Auckland's many volcanic eruptions, 150,000 years ago. From Takapuna Beach you can walk south to Narrow Neck Beach or North to Milford Beach. Both walks are best done at low tide.

This is one of the best natural harbours in New Zealand, with numerous bays and inlets. Port Fitzroy has always been a mecca for yachts, launches and commercial craft. At Christmas up to 2000 boats can anchor safely in its many bays and coves without congestion. With deep water right up the edges it is possible to anchor and tie the stern to a pohutakawa tree. Its two deep narrow entrances make Port Fitzroy landlocked and a safe harbour even in the worst of storms.

Today, thanks to a shipping hazard and evidence of the havoc it s wreaked, the town's colonial-style architecture is 'base camp' for scuba divers from around the world. Five kilometres offshore from Umkomaas lies the internationally-renowned Aliwal Shoal - a fossilised sand dune of sponges, soft and hard coral - first spotted in 1849 but not adequately highlighted until after it sank the steamer Nebo in 1884.
