Between Burnham Overy Staithe and the sea, the river spreads out into multiple tidal creeks through the salt marshes that fringe the coast hereabouts, and finally leaves land behind by passing though the fronting sand dunes at a gap locally known as Burnham Harbour. Small boats can reach Burnham Overy Staithe through this gap and creek. Today Burnham Overy Staithe, and the associated harbour, is a major recreational sailing centre. It is also the point of departure for ferries to the Scolt Head Island National Nature Reserve.

Blakeney is a small village on the north coast of Norfolk UK in an area of outstanding natural beauty and remains largely untouched by the pace and commercialism of modern life. The village is recorded in King William's Domesday Book of 1086 under the name Esnuterle, later known as Snitterley. By 1240 the haven in the lee of the shingle ridge was known as Blakeney, and this became the name of the village.

Saundersfoot used to be a small fishing village. There was also some shipbuilding here. In the 1800's Saundersfoot became very popular with the black gold rush when high quality anthracite was found locally. This coal was in demand and in 1829 a whole new harbour was built and railways shipped the coal to the harbour from six mines. With the decline of coal sales and other more profitable coal mining operations both in the UK and abroad, the mining ceased and Saundersfoot became a popular tourist destination.
