La Rochelle is one of the most beautiful places in France. There is an old port which still has the towers which used to protect it. The center is particularly beautiful, with pale stone used for the majority of the buildings and many of the walkways. There are 2 basins in the old port which now have a large number of pleasure boats moored there. The fireworks for the 14th of July Bastille day celebrations are very impressive. Hotels are plentiful, and prices are very keen. Some offer views across the harbour, although these rooms command a higher price.

The fishing village of Mahahual is only about 3 km (2 miles) away from the Costa Maya cruise port. Cruise ships can easily be seen from the village. Mahahual has soft sand beaches, grass thatched palapas, and a coral reef a short distance off-shore, as well as several bars, restaurants, and shops. A resort development called New Mahahual is being created directly inland from the port. When ships are in port, the village is busy with cruise passengers.
Costa Maya's port has a new and modern tourist shopping mall. The center has a central plaza with saltwater pools and "swim-up" style bars. There are several jewellery stores and many small shops selling ubiquitous souvenir items. It is generally open only to cruise ship passengers.

Wyk auf Foehr
