A lighthouse was built in 1892 to mark the shoal, but was eventually moved to Port Shepstone. The village soon became a thriving resort and trading centre as it is today. Apart from a fine beach with shark-protected bathing and tidal pools, Scottburgh has a crocodile breeding farm, miniature railway and a bird watching hide in the coastal forest.
