The Mondsee Land, home to both the Mondsee and Irrsee lake, has been a popular holiday destination for decades. At just 27 km away from the festival city of Salzburg, international guests to the region can enjoy the many activities it has to offer.
The Mondsee and Irrsee lakes are the warmest lakes in the Salzkammergut region and can reach temperatures of 27 °C in July and August. The Irrsee lake is very natural and ideal for all gentle water sports. The Mondsee lake plays host to numerous water sports activities such as surfing and sailing schools, wakeboarding, kite surfing, water skiing schools, diving schools, boat trips, diving, etc.
The period of Advent is celebrated peacefully in Mondsee. High quality cultural events are held in the Basilica, beautiful crafts which make perfect Christmas gifts are sold in the cloisters of the former abbey and the church yard hosts events and gourmet foods stands. Each year, ever more guests on the look-out for individuality and originality come to Mondsee to celebrate Advent. The Winter months in Mondsee attract few tourists. As a result, hotels often offer Winter well-being packages during this period and the Mondsee region is the perfect place to relax away from the hustle and bustle of skiers. For those who do wish to ski, however, the closest skiing area is just 30 km away.
The Mondsee region is characterised by the unique convergence of folk culture and high culture it offers. Some of the events include festival processions, brass bands, the Mondsee Lake Festival, the ‘Mondsee Jedermann’ theatrical performance, sacred celebrations, etc. The Mondsee music days, a chamber music festival, take place every year at the beginning of September and are a great meeting place for the community.
This logboat was carved from the trunk of a fir tree which was once 50m tall and approx. 250 years old.
The Mondsee logboat is the oldest boat to be found in Mondsee and is over 11m in length. It was made using only the very best part of the tree. The trees were usually felled in late Autumn by the waning moon. Beautiful exhibits from the logboats of Mondsee are on display at the quayside as well as at the Mondsee open-air smokehouse museum. Even today, six professional fishers practise their craft on the Mondsee lake virtually every day, catching delicious fish which can be savoured in most of Mondsee’s guesthouses and restaurants. The Mondsee lake is of drinking water quality and is enjoyed by thousands of bathers all year round; this quality is also reflected in the delicious flavour of the Mondsee fish.
The great variety of culture is a real benefit of the Mondsee region. Every local resident is involved in at least one cultural association. With five music bands, traditional costume societies, theatre groups, singing groups and a music school… our culture is alive all year long. The residents of the Mondsee area are part of a valuable social and cultural network.
