Sete

Sete, presqu'ile… The omnipresence of water, its incomparable light and colours; all qualities which have given it its second name "Venice of the Languedoc". Built on the flanks of Mont St.Clair, wedged between the Thau Lagoon, the Sea and the canals, Sete is one of the largest ports on the Mediterranean Sea. In Sète, there is a sweet mixture of scents from the Sea and the Garrigue in the air. Paul Valéry and Georges Brassens are its two most famous sons. It is also a cosmopolitan city, in which its foreign communities, mostly Italians, contribute to its picturesque ambience. At 183 meters high, the Mont St. Clair offers a panoramic view of the city and its ports. LA FORET DOMANIALE DES PIERRES BLANCHES, a national pine forest, offers a number of footpaths where you can enjoy spectacular views of the Mediterranean and the Thau Lagoon. Sete's 12 kilometers of fine sandy beach separate the Sea from the Thau Lagoon. Sete's beach has been rewarded with the Pavillon Bleu for water quality for many years.

The only French port on the Mediterranean in the heart of town - The Quai de la Marine and it's restaurants offer a large choice of Sete's specialities, and the canal provides the entertainment with the parade of trawlers and fishing nets splayed out in the Sun in all their colorful glory. After a day-out fishing, the trawlers unload the fish onto the quai to be sold at auction. Guided tours of the fishing port and the auction house, are organized by the Tourist Office, with a tasting of local products. Our fishing port is in the town centre, the float of fishing boats composed of trawlers and tuna boats, is staying along the quays. Restaurants located on the quays put Sete gastronomy to honour, fish of the Mediterranean sea and shellfish of the Thau lagoon. Le Mole Saint Louis - Built in 1666, 750 meters long, this jetty allows the visitor to stroll in the town center all the while enjoying the Sea breeze. The Môle also serves as the site for the pleasure boat marina and its 300 moorings. Whatever you like : lying lazing on your beach matress or you'd rather enjoy life playing beach games or having fun with friends at the beach bars and restaurants, you 'll find happiness on the twelve km fine sandy beach.
