Schliersee - A perfect little lake town, lost in the calm serenity of the Bavarian Alps, Schliersee feels like an older, slower Germany.
A pastoral village, happily oriented around a glassy lake, Schliersee is a community full of neighbors, of walking paths, family restaurants, and churches. Schliersee is only a scant 55km from the kinetic city of Munich, but the pace, the tone, and the mood of the town does not suggest such a close proximity to Bavaria's capital.
Ludwig's storybook Neuschwanstein castle is a short day trip away, as is Austria's famous Salzburg. Schliersee, though tiny, is known both for its quality spa-resorts and schnapps.
After the Grosser Deutch indulgences of the German beer gardens and Octoberfests, Schliersee provides a temptation free escape into detoxification. Sweat out the salty schnitzels and steins of lager in the local saunas, jacuzzis and pools. Between jaunts in the steam, spend some time strolling around the walking paths crisscrossing the hills and circling the central lake.
Sample local dishes of hardy Bavarian soups and dumplings and leave town with a gift of the locally distilled schnapps and fruit liqueurs in a handcrafted ceramic vessel.
