The popular local recreation area of Warnemuende is situated north of the Hanseatic town of Rostock, where the Warnow river flows into the Baltic Sea.
Undoubtedly, Warnemuende is one of the most beautiful traditional German resorts at the Baltic coast. Warnemuende can look back to 800 years of history and a development of 160 years as a seaside resort. Not only the miles and miles of white beaches and romantic fishermen’s houses, but also the idyllic "Old River" with its sailing boats, pleasure ships and fishermen selling the catch from their cutters, provide Warnemuende with its specific charm, provide the place with the "special something". The visitor is magically attracted by the charming small boutiques and fishermen`s pubs as well as by the great ocean liners. From a very short distance all visitors can observe, directly from the Warnemuende pier, how big luxury cruise ships, sailing vessels, ferryboats and freight liners are entering and leaving.

The Warnemuende sailing area is regarded highly in Germany and abroad. It is one of the most attractive regatta areas in Europe.
An annual highlight is the Hanse-Sail in August, the coming together of many sailing vessels from all over the world. The traditional sailing parade off the coast of Warnemuende can be observed very well from the seaside terrace of the Wilhelmshoehe recreation area.
The former harbour entrance of Warnemuende is today a fishing and sailing harbour. It is the departing point of tours of the harbour and of the sea. The Old River, opposite the yachting harbour, ends at the western pier. The pier stretches 500 meters into the sea. At this point also starts the sandy beach, which is 500 meters wide .
The lighthouse and western pier are symbols of Warnemuende. To go for a stroll on the promenade is worth the experience at any season.
In a western direction, the beach of Warnemuende leads to a steep coast, called Stoltera. This part of the coast is legally protected.
