Amrum

Amrum is one of the North Frisian Islands on the German coast of the North Sea. It is part of the Nordfriesland district in the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein. Its area is 20 km², and its population is 2,400. There are five villages in Amrum on the eastern coast: Wittduen, Nebel, Norddorf, Sueddorf and Steenodde. The western half of the island is occupied by a large dune area; the highest dune is 32 m high. While Nebel, Norddorf and Steenodde are very old Frisian hamlets, the village of Wittduen was founded as a seaside resort in the 19th century. It includes the ferry port, which provides ferry connections to Dagebüll (on the mainland) and Wyk (on Föhr). Cars are allowed on the island, though there is only one main road. The three municipalities of the island, Nebel, Norddorf and Wittdün belong to the Amt Föhr-Amrum.
