Thingeyri

Thriving fishing and fish processing are the main sources of employment, but services to tourists increase by the year and one of Iceland's oldest houses , a warehouse dating back to the 18th century, is at Thingeyri. Spectacular nature surrounds Þingeyri, the Western Fiord's highest mountain, Kaldbakur, and many other beautiful mountains and valleys. It is popular to drive to the top of Mt Sandafell and enjoy the unobstructed view on a fine day. The distance from Reykjavik is 429 km by the Whale Bay tunnel.

Today Thingeyri is a lively and modern fishing port and tourist centre. Mt. Sandafell can be ascended by car for a magnificent view of the fjord, and of the mountain ridge which separates Dyrafjordur from Arnarfjordur and is often called the "West Fjords Alps," although its alpine peaks are much lower than their brothers in Europe. The ridge is crowned by Mt. Kaldbakur, at 998 meters the highest peak in the West Fjords.
