Located on the dramatic Atlantic coast, just 8km northwest of Ballyshannon and 16km south of Donegal Town, the beach has fantastic views of the Donegal Bay coastline including Slieve League the highest sea cliffs in Europe. Set in a 4km crescent of golden sand with the sparkle of shimmering waves breaking on the beach, it is popular for all kinds of watersports, board sailing, surfing and water skiing. The magnificent beach provides ideal conditions for safe bathing (with lifeguard patrols), walking, jogging and the invigorating fresh sea air.

Close by, the Donegal Historical Society Museum is housed in the Franciscan Friary and is well worth a visit. Rossnowlagh beach was one of the first places to be surfed in Ireland in the early 1960's. An Ideal surf break for the less experienced and Longboarders, in the summer months of July and August when the waves are up surfboards and wetsuits, as well as surf lessons, are available for hire at the surf club on the seafront next to the Lifeguard station and if the waves are down visit Ireland's only surf museum in the surfer' Bar which is full of old photos, posters and other memorabilia. Quality accommodation in Rossnowlagh includes the Sand House Hotel, self catering and B&B's. The local restaurants are renowned throughout the north west of Ireland and beyond for their sea food.
