Malcesine

Malcesine, on the eastern shores of Lake Garda, clustered around a tall Scaliger castle dating back to 1500 and the historical "Captains' Palace", has preserved its old medieval origins intact, together with the typical Mediterranean appearance of the buildings overlooking the little port that fired Goethe's imagination.  The climate, which is always mild and healthy, is perfect all year round for magnificent walks in the hills and up in the mountains, in the midst of olive groves and luxurious Mediterranean vegetation. Of great importance for sport and tourism are the activities of Malcesine's sailing club, known throughout the world for the results achieved by its champions as well as for the important international events it organises on Lake Garda.  There are many occasions for sailing, water-skiing, windsurfing, tennis or minigolf, hang gliding, mountain biking and, during the winter, skiing. Excursions - Sport Mount Baldo is an extraordinary open-air gym, with views over Lake Garda, the Po Valley, and the Pre-Alps of Veneto and Lombardy, where sports enthusiasts, from novices to the most expert, can practice their favourite sports. There is a host of routes of different levels available for hikers and excursionists: from easy walks from the station uphill of the cableway, to the high water at Malcesine, to more difficult climbs up to Mount Altissimo (2h 40 minutes), the Telegrafo Refuge (3h 30 minutes), or the Bocca di Navene Refuge (1 hour).

As well as easy hikes and difficult climbs, Mount Baldo is the ideal place for cyclists and lovers of free flight. Using the new cableway, it is possible to take a bicycle with you and once you have arrived up on the mountain, you will find more than 40 km of paths, dirt tracks and roads covering its length and breadth, as far as the banks of Lake Garda. For the new "Icarus", brave enough to take flight using a hang-glider or paraglider, there is an incomparable glide over many kilometres, where altitude is easily maintained, thanks to the thermal currents that rise up from Lake Garda. The only problem here will be leaving this dream behind to come back down to earth. At 1800 m above sea level and higher, Mount Baldo is normally covered with snow from Christmas to the end of March and it hosts a lively skiing season.  For years, there has been a set of lifts, including: the Prà Alpesina chairlift (1430 - 1830 m), which can be reached either from the cableway at Malcesine or by car, from the Ala - Avio exit of the Brennero motorway, the La Colma ski lift, Pozza della Stella, Falco, etc.
