Bergen aan Zee

Bergen aan Zee (Western Frisian: See an Bergen) is a coastal town in the municipality of Bergen, in the Dutch province of Noord-Holland. The village is situated on the North Sea coast and has 470 inhabitants (2004). The village is relatively young and was created by a vision of great land baron and Lord of Bergen, Mayor Jacob van Reenen. The dunes were already a number of homes and farms but not on very large scale. Part of the occupation was in Bergen, on the inside of the dunes in Bergen and another part was already Bergen aan Zee, which is a feeder for Bergen. More to the coast there is less housing and less agriculture. The first initiatives were done, and opportunities for other things were also noted, such as the possibility of sea and tourism.

Mayors wife Maria van Reenen - Völter and descendant of Zeiler oversaw many of the new developments and then added more. This created by private initiative in 1906 an entirely new village, which is the old name. In the 2006 quarter we expanded the 100-year anniversary of the village. Bergen aan Zee has become a real resort, where not only tourists can enjoy but it is also a beloved haven for surfers and catamaraners. In the resort are medium-sized and small hotels, apartments and guest houses. Another big attraction is the aquarium, which reflects sea creatures from in and around the Netherlands and the rest of the world. And for art lovers there is a sculpture garden, where several artists from Bergen display their sculptures.
