Cala Ratjada on Mallorca's north east coast is centred on an old town with a working port. This serves as a base for various boat trips along the coast as well as for ferries to Menorca. Pay a visit to Cafeteria Maritimo which overlooks the port then take a walk north overlooking the sea until you reach the stunning little bay of Cala Gat, a truly hidden gem as far as best beaches of the area is concerned. If you fancy a few days of peace and tranquility stay at the Cala Gat Hotel. To find the main tourist area of Cala Ratjada head towards Cala Agulla from the old town. On the way to the beach you'll see plenty bars and restaurants mostly catering to the German market. A few nice hotels are located in this area including the Hotel S'Entrador. The beautiful beach at Cala Agulla is down the hill below the resort area is one of Cala Ratjada's main attractions with golden sand and glorious, turquoise waters with fabulous views out to sea. Cala Mesquida is another great beach a little further around the same headland that is well worth making the effort to get to. To the south of Cala Ratjada is the popular beach of Son Mol which isn't nearly as picturesque as as the bays to the north of town. Continue along the coast road here to reach more pleasant coastal retreats including Font de Sa Cala. You can take a pleasant drive (or cycle if you're fit enough) through the forest up to the lighthouse at Faro de Capdepera where there are stunning views along the coastline. Another highly recommended drive is to the fortress town of Capdepera just a few kilometres inland. Originally Cala Ratjada developed as the fishing and trading port of Capdepera. The Caves of Arta are nearby and are well worth a look, you can get there by boat from Cala Ratjada during the summer months. The beach near the caves at Canyamel is excellent. There are plenty more tourist attractions down the east coast including a visit to the well known Caves of Drach at Porto Cristo. The town of Arta is just inland and has its castle and churches are outstanding, especially the Church of Transfiguración del Señor which must be one of the most stunning buildings in Spain let alone Mallorca. Golf enthusiasts will be glad to know that there are four courses almost on your doorstep from Cala Ratjada at Capdepera, Canyamel, Pula and Son Servera.
