Gran Canaria info

It is located southeast of Tenerife and west of Fuerteventura. The island is of volcanic origin, mostly made of fissure vents.

The island was populated by the Canarios, who may have arrived as early as 500 BC. The Canarios called the island Tamarán. It was claimed by Spain in the 15th century.

Gran Canaria's surface is 1,560 km² and its maximum altitude is 1,949 meters (Pico de Las Nieves). It has a round shape, with a diameter of approximately 50 km.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the biggest city of the Canary Islands, also the capital of the province of Las Palmas, and also one of the two capitals of the autonomous community of the Canary Islands, along with Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Gran Canaria never goes below 20°C. Winters hover around 22°C and in the summer about 26°C. Always lovely and sunny, with hardly, any rain at all for the entire year. The northern part of this island is cool while the southern part is warm.

The population was 17,158 in 2002, and growing. Hotels, restaurants, taverns and villas are aligned with its beach....

Puerto de Mogan is a picturesque resort and fishing village in the municipality of Mogan, set at the mouth of a steep-sided valley on the southwest coast of the island of Gran Canaria and attracts many tourists either to stay or on day-visits. Canal-like channels linking the marina to the fishing harbour have led to it being nicknamed "Little Venice" or the "Venice of the Canaries"....
