Oropesa del Mar meets all the requirements of a first-class tourist destination. It is situated near Castellón (22 km) and within the Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca Park and Oropesa mountain range and favours good weather all year round. Here the Mediterranean is crystal clear, with fine sand beaches and whimsical coves.
It also offers other attractions: fish dishes, history in its monuments, festivities and traditions and a marina.
The strategic location of Oropesa del Mar and its good weather have been the key to the evolution of the town through history. In 1379 the castle and its walls were fortified against attacks from Berber pirates.
A unique monument
Pedro I de Antequera built on the coast the King’s defence tower, a unique Renaissance military monument. There are another two 16th century watch towers on the coast: La Dona and Sant Julià.
A medieval town
At the top of the old town are the ruins of the Muslim origin walls and castle. Very near is Mare de Déu and Paciència church (14th and 18th centuries). Another interesting visit is the antique dealers’ quarter “Ciudad de los Anticuarios”, with shops specialising in medieval art, irons, popular art, paintings, etc.
Sea contrasts
On the north of the cape by the town there are extensive beaches, such as Amplàries and Morro de Gos, which are ideal for marine sports. Further south is La Concha bay with its still waters.
The landscape that follows is beautiful, with cliffs and coves surrounded by pines. The residential areas of Bellver and Renegà beaches are situated in this beautiful environment.
Within nature
Inland, the Oropesa del Mar mountain range presents a natural wall, making the weather mild all year round. A visit on foot to the Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca Natural Park is also recommended.
Popular festivities
The patron festivities are held from the first Sunday of October and are dedicated to the Virgen de la Paciencia. Among the acts that are organized stand out the contests, the processions, the concerts and the bullfighting feasts.
On the following Monday a contest of paellas is celebrated.
