Brissago

Brissago has much to offer its visitors: if you love nature and its beauty, hike from to the impressive lake landscape to the no less delightful mountain landscape. En route, you can admire the magnificent camellias, mimosas, forsythias and robinias. The first terraced constructions in the area of where Brissago is today were documented as far back as around 1,000 BC. At that time, Ligurians and Celts had major settlements in that region. The Romans brought with them a different culture that included new cultivated plants (such as grapes, chestnuts and nuts), which later gained great economic significance. Mountains and Lake. Where one ends, the other begins, and vice versa. There is not even a tiny bit of plain land in Brissago.

The deposits that were washed ashore, however, favoured the settlement and development of Locarno, Ascona, Cannobio and most of the towns and villages around Lake Verbano. If you look up from the town hall square, you can see the top of the “Lenzuoli” rocks at an altitude of more than 2000 metres. The mountains start rising immediately, surrounded by three “slopes” and by two large deep valleys that slope down towards Lake Verbano. Nonetheless, for at least one thousand years, the people of Brissago with their exceptional determination have managed to shape this harsh and precipitous land that demands continuous strength and effort. Perhaps it was the environment that shaped their character, which, if not exactly rebellious, is still anything but mellow.
