Swanage

Swanage - traditional seaside bucket & spade holiday resort on the Isle of Purbeck. Swanage is most picturesquely situated in the Bay, with a gently shelving sandy beach, a Victorian pier with a unique shop, exhibition and popular too for fishing, with fabulous views across to The Needles on the Isle of Wight and beyond. There are superb walks along the Dorset cliffs but Swanage is self contained if you feel less energetic. There are many interesting shops, ranging from quaint gift shops to smaller branches of important chain stores in the High Street, attractive parks and gardens, tearooms offering Dorset cream teas, fish & chips, plenty of pub grub, and restaurants with a variety of specialities, including locally caught fish, and of course... there is the famous Punch and Judy Show! The Swanage calendar brings the frenzy of the Jazz Weekend, the exciting annual Regatta & Carnival Week, the lively Folk Festival, and many railway oriented special weeks. Swanage offers tennis, bowls and putting too, a theatre, and a super children's play park overlooking the entire Bay. There is an informative Heritage Centre. Dolphins are frequently seen from the clifftops, and the cliff walks are a delight for bird, wildlife and ecology lovers. The Durlston Country Park Centre has fascinating displays on local history. The terminus of the Swanage Railway is situated right in the town and you may take a delightful standard gauge preserved steam train journey through the Purbeck countryside to Corfe Castle. During the summer, trains run very late so you can enjoy the pubs and forget the car.

The bus station is alongside Swanage railway station and services are provided to many local attractions and places. Harmans Cross is a delightful location between Swanage and Corfe Castle. It has its own railway station with a passing loop and hosts interesting fairs, special events and rallies during the year. The Paddlesteamer Waverley or Balmoral offer exciting sea trips from Swanage Pier to places along the Dorset coast and the Solent. Swanage Pier is itself a great place - don't miss it! Locally hired boat trips are ideal for viewing the lighthouse and the Dorset cliffs, or for deep sea fishing.
