Flanking its historic harbour the town has shingle/sandy beaches where you may enjoy sunbathing, swimming and water sports. Rejoicing in its maritime heritage Whitstable celebrates with the famous summer Oyster Festival in July each year.
The town's historic harbour, was built in 1832 to serve the world's first passenger railway service. Nicknamed the Crab and Winkle line. it linked Canterbury to London via a steam ship from the harbour. Today, whilst still a commercial port, you may see the activities of the harbour and fish market, then eat the morning's catch at one of the towns popular seafood restaurants.
Whitstable has many art galleries and colourful craft shops, especially in Harbour Street, where an original souvenir of your visit may be found.
Start your visit in the Whitstable Information Centre where knowledgeable staff are waiting to help you enjoy your visit to their town and the county of Kent. They hold information on the rest of England too. The centre offers many services. Including a gift shop which includes local books, maps and guides. They can also book both local and national accommodation, theatres, ferry and coach trips etc in and around Whitstable.
