Kodiak

Founded by Russian colonists in 1764, Kodiak today is a vibrant fishing community. There are 10,000 residents in the town of Kodiak, with another 2,500 people in five villages around the coast of Kodiak Island. Kodiak Island is a largely roadless wilderness about the size of Connecticut, and is home to the giant Kodiak Bear, the Kodiak King Crab, and in the summer, millions of wild salmon. It is homeport to the largest fleet of commercial fishing vessels, as well as the largest Coast Guard Base in the U.S. Kodiak Island, a vast mountainous island in the Gulf of Alaska, is home to the world famous Kodiak Brown Bear, teeming rivers of salmon, and stunning scenery. Visitors to Kodiak can enjoy world class hunting and sport fishing, sea kayaking, whale watching and wildlife photography.
