Au Train Lake is located in Alger County in the heart of the Hiawatha National Forest, along the shores of Lake Superior on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. This pristine, forested region is known for its’ excellent fishing, camping, canoeing and snowmobiling. The Au Train River, near the town of Au Train, is known as one of the safest and most scenic waterways in the state for canoeing, and many inland lakes in the region, as well as Lake Superior, offer fantastic fishing and boating opportunities.
In wintertime, Alger County has over 300 miles of marked and well-groomed snowmobile trails that travel through beautiful wilderness areas, past streams, lakes, waterfalls and woodlands. This area has consistently led other parts of the nation in snowmobile trail renovations and upkeep. Other recreational opportunities in the Au Train Lake area include ice fishing, cross country skiing, ice skating, swimming, boating, water skiing, hiking and biking. Both Au Train Lake and Lake Superior have beautiful beaches for visitors to enjoy. The town of Au Train is easily reached via Michigan Highway 28 or U.S. Highway 2, and is located between the towns of Munising and Christmas.
The Northwestern Region of Michigan's Upper Peninsula is a wilderness area with four seasons. The climate is greatly influenced by Lake Superior, as well as cold, dry air coming from the Arctic region. The Lake acts as a giant humidifier, increasing the moisture content of the air throughout the year.
In the winter, this moisture condenses as snow when it reaches the land, creating heavy snowfall, known as "snow squalls." The shores of Lake Superior are prone to this "lake effect" snow and have recorded up to 350 inches of snow in a single year. However, average snowfall for this area is 177 days per year. In summer, the cooling lake breezes have a positive effect on the climate, keeping it from becoming too hot and uncomfortable. This area has an average of only one-day per year when the temperature reaches 90 degrees F.
