East Tawas is a city in Iosco County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 2951 at the 2000 census.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.3 square miles (8.6 km²), of which, 2.9 square miles (7.5 km²) of it is land and 0.4 square miles (1.2 km²) of it (13.51%) is water. East Tawas is located within the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gaylord. It is considered to be part of Northern Michigan.
Although it is a small city, it has a very lively downtown area. The main downtown area would probably be considered the six-block area between Sawyer, Lincoln, Bay, and Main Street. Downtown East Tawas is home to many small shops. Many of these shops can be found on Newman Street, including Mooney's Ben Franklin, the Book Nook, Tawas Bay Fudge Company, Miller Shoes, O'Connor's, Village Chocolatier, Marmar Gourmet, Windjammer's, etc. Every shop has a small town feel and sells unique items. Many restaurants can be found here as well. A major attraction in downtown would be the Newman Street mini mall. Downtown is also home to the only movie theatre in the small town of East Tawas.

Situated in Iosco County, in Northeast Michigan, Tawas Bay provides arguably the best natural harbor on Lake Huron. Tawas Point shelters the Bay from the strong northeast storms that can quickly arise, particularly in the autumn and winter months.
Tawas Bay averages approximately 15 to 25 feet in depth offshore and has a nearshore average water temperature in the summer months in the 70's.
Fishing in Tawas Bay includes Walleye, Northern Pike, Yellow Perch, Brown Trout, Smallmouth Bass. During the spring and fall, Whitefish, Steelhead, Brown Trout, Lake Trout and Walleye move along the shoreline of the Bay.
The twin cities of Tawas City and East Tawas and the Township of Baldwin share the coastline of Tawas Bay. According to the 2000 census, Tawas City has a permanent resident population of approximately 2,005 while East Tawas has a permanent resident population of 2,951. Baldwin Township has a permanent resident population of 1,726. During the summer months, the area's population swells with an influx of visitors and part-time residents.
