Puerto Natales is a Chilean City located in the shore of Admiral Mont Gulf, in the XII region of Magallanes. It is the Main City of the Natales Community and of the Province of Ultima Esperanza, named so by the expeditionary that catalogued it with the “Last Hope” to find the Stretch of Magallanes from north to south. Located nearly 250 km to the north of Punta Arenas.
The inside of Ultima Esperanza, originally inhabited by tribes of Kawesgar and Aonikenk, was run in 1557 by navigator Juan Fernandez Ladrillero while seeking a path to the Stretch of Magallanes. Immigrations of Germans and Britain’s in the century XVIII and XIX maintained sheep livestock, the principal economic activity of the region. Finally, in 1911 it was officially founded as the city of Natales Port. Actually Paine’s strong point is the tourism, being the entering door for tourist expeditions to Paine’s Towers National Park, known world wide by its beautiful vistas. Also notable is the Milodon Cove Natural Monument, ancient home of a herbivore mammalian more 3 meters of high.
