Stanley is situated on the north west coast. The immediate and most striking feature of the village's location is the 'Nut'. This flat topped, cliff faced slab shaped rock formation towers over the town to a height of 150 metres, Arthur's Seat and can be explored by foot or cable car. The 'Nut' has a spectacular setting and is surrounded by sea apart from an isthmus which connects to the mainland. Stanley village is located on this strip.

This is one of the best natural harbours in New Zealand, with numerous bays and inlets. Port Fitzroy has always been a mecca for yachts, launches and commercial craft. At Christmas up to 2000 boats can anchor safely in its many bays and coves without congestion. With deep water right up the edges it is possible to anchor and tie the stern to a pohutakawa tree. Its two deep narrow entrances make Port Fitzroy landlocked and a safe harbour even in the worst of storms.
