Area restaurants, inns, art galleries, and gift shops offer the traveler additional activities.

Ballyholme is a part of Bangor, County Down, Northern Ireland. It is a seaside area on Ballyholme bay, the lesser known, though larger of Bangor's two bays.

Bangor probably takes its name from its curving bay set between a pair of symmetrical headlands (beanna chor - curved peaks) and its sheltered position made it ideal for exploitation as a holiday resort.

The lunar landscape of the Giant's Causeway, lurking below the gaunt sea wall where the land ends, must have struck wonder into the hearts of the ancient Irish. The Causeway proper is a mass of basalt columns packed tightly together. The tops of the columns form stepping stones that lead from the cliff foot and disappear under the sea. Altogether there are 40,000 of these stone columns, mostly hexagonal but some with four, five, seven and eight sides. The tallest are about 40 feet high, and the solidified lava in the cliffs is 90 feet thick in places.

Newtownards, Bangor is a seaside resort set against the backdrop of Ireland's largest marina, with berths for 600 craft. It has excellent facilities and has recently earned the prestigious 5 Gold Anchor Award. Bangor's old world charm is enhanced with all of the modern amenities expected by today's visitors. The apartment and town houses are all situated in a quiet residential area, and close to all public amenities. Portaferry is a small town in County Down, Northern Ireland, at the southern end of the Ards Peninsula, near the Narrows at the entrance to Strangford Lough. It has an aquarium and is well-known for the annual Galway Hookers Regatta. It hosts its own small Marina, the Portaferry Marina. A passenger/car ferry service operates daily at 15 minute intervals (8am to 11pm) between the villages of Portaferry and Strangford, less than a mile apart, conveying about 500,000 passengers per annum.

It only takes a quick glance at the map to see that this broad swath of rocky shoreline and rolling countryside is indeed located at Coastal Maine's heart. A brief visit is all you'll need to learn that the Belfast area is nestled in Maine's heart in a more important way as well.
