Welcome to Blue Grouse Vineyards, Duncan, BC, Canada. Blue Grouse Vineyards is a family-owned and operated vineyard and winery established as one of the founding Estates wineries of Vancouver Island. Originally from Germany, the Kiltz family has lived all around the globe. They moved Duncan in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island in 1989 where they established their beautiful home and surrounding Vineyards. What initially started as a hobby, later turned into a full-scale pioneering business. Since 1993, their elegant wood-paneled wine shop and tasting room has been welcoming visitors to taste and purchase the wines that Hans and Evangeline Kiltz have been growing and producing on their land.
Once the preferred habitat of blue grouse, the 31 acres of Blue Grouse Vineyards is tucked away on the sunniest slope of Vancouver Island's Cowichan Valley. The terroir encompasses wind protection by evergreen trees, an all-southern exposure, a combination of clay and gravely soil, and the nurturing pure air and spring water. Thanks to this exceptional site, the vines require neither fertilization nor irrigation, just a drop of passion, a splash of dedication and hard work and a pinch of obsession!
At Blue Grouse, wine quality is attained through infinite small steps taken with precision and pride. Evangeline is devoted to hand pruning and training of the vines; while Hans, senior winemaker, takes care of the land and the processing of all the hand-harvested grapes, and together with their son, Richard, succeeds in producing true and healthy varietal wines that capture the essence of their Vineyards' climate and soil.
