Christian's stands at the original site of the Captain Isaiah Lewis House, built in 1818. The Captain's daughter once ran a private school in the living room of this house and when the Captain retired, he sold flour and grain from the front yard.
The house was bought at auction for $3,000 in 1887. The original single story home was then raised and a new ground floor was built underneath. The Lawyer Herman Andrew Harding bought the house and remodeled completely. In 1915 it was the first house in Chatham to have electric lights.
The change from residence to Restaurant happened in 1961. The Eddy family converted the home to â?The Chatham Armsâ? and it was a Main Street landmark for 18 years. When purchased by the Schultz family in 1980, the second and third stories were still living areas. During the 17 years the Schultz family owned the Restaurant an outside deck was added, and the mahogany paneled bar and second kitchen completed the Restaurant expansion upstairs.
Christianâ??s remains a Chatham landmark, continuing its great tradition, serving year-round offering a fabulous site for your next celebration, shower, luncheon, rehearsal dinner or wedding.
