Sixty years ago a half dozen dedicated individuals formed a theater group which held its first performance in a church parish hall, and subsequently in the old Civic Center on the site of the present City Library in Delray Beach, United States. The theater has evolved from these humble beginnings to its present day facility featuring an impressive plant which seats an audience of 238 people.
The Delray Beach Playhouse is a non-profit cultural and educational organization which is administered by a Board of Governors. The Board hires the professional staff, which includes the Artistic & Design Directors and the Executive Director, who is in charge of administration and sales as well as Box Office personnel. The Delray Beach Playhouse Theater's policy of hiring professionals who have extensive experience in inspiring and molding promising talent, has served to establish the enduring record it holds as one of the most successful community theaters in the country.
Each production at The Delray Beach Playhouse is the product of the involvement of a diverse cross-section of community members represented by doctors, lawyers, businessmen, students, carpenters and writers of widely varying ages. Lighting and sound effects, set construction and costuming are handled by willing and eager-to-learn volunteers. The By-Laws of The Delray Beach Playhouse prohibit any form of compensation to its performers, all of whom are cast as a result of open auditions.
