The society 'Friends of Cumberland House' in Southsea, United Kingdom, was formed in response to the City Councils
threat to close the Museum. Since then the decision has been taken to close the Museum
pending a successful lottery bid to extend the City Museum in Southsea and rehouse the Cumberland House Natural History
Museum exhibits in the new extension.
The Friends of Cumberland House now focus their campaign on making the best of the Museum in the
time it has left. It is unlikely that the new Museum wing, even if the lottery bid is successful,
will be operational within 3 years. Potentially this means that no support or money is to be
offered to the Natural History Collection to maintain the existing exhibits or update the site
for the children of today.
By keeping public attention focused on the plight of Cumberland
House Natural History Museum and by offering support to the Museum, the Friends of Cumberland House society hope
to go some way to rectify this. This website
forms part of that campaign and hopefully will enhance a visit to the
Museum in Southsea.
The Society is always looking for new members, if you are interested then please contact us.
